What is Functional Medicine?
Tired of hearing 'your labs are normal' when you know something is wrong? Functional medicine looks beyond the averages to find the root cause of your fatigue and illness.

The "Normal" Trap
It is a scenario we see every week at Magnolia Functional Wellness in Southlake, TX. A new patient sits down, looking exhausted, and places a stack of lab results on the desk."I went to my primary care doctor," they say. "I told them I'm tired, I can't lose weight, my hair is thinning, and I have no libido. They ran my blood, called me two days later, and said everything is normal."
If everything is normal, why do you feel terrible?
Pathology vs. Physiology
The problem lies in how traditional medicine defines "health." Standard reference ranges (the numbers on the right side of your lab report) are based on the average population. But in modern America, the "average" person is often overweight, stressed, and inflamed. Being in the "normal" range just means you don't have a diagnosable disease yet. It does not mean you are healthy.
In Functional Medicine, we don't look for "normal." We look for optimal.
Case Study: The Thyroid Miss
Let's look at the thyroid as an example.
- Standard Medicine: Often only tests TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone). If your TSH is between 0.5 and 4.5, you are told you are fine.
- Functional Medicine: We know that TSH is just the signal to the thyroid. We need to know what the thyroid is actually doing. We test Free T3, Free T4, and Reverse T3.
- Scenario: Your TSH is "normal" (2.5), but your Free T3 (the active hormone that gives you energy) is at the very bottom of the range. A standard doctor misses this. A functional doctor sees this as "sub-clinical hypothyroidism" and treats it, often resolving the fatigue immediately.
The Root Cause Approach
We are not interested in symptom management. If you have high blood pressure, we don't just want to lower it; we want to know why it's high. Is it magnesium deficiency? Insulin resistance? Chronic stress?
By addressing the Root Cause—whether it is gut dysbiosis, chronic inflammation, or hormonal imbalance—we don't just mask symptoms. We aim to resolve them.
Your Health Investigation Starts Here
